What's Your Main Crafting Goal?

Earn GP While Training

Battlestaves are the premier profit Crafting method. Water, Earth, Fire, and Air Battlestaves all sell for more than their material cost. With daily battlestaff deals from Zaff, you can profit 500-800 GP per staff while gaining 100 XP each.

Reach Quest Requirements Quickly

Many quests require specific Crafting levels. Gem cutting is fast and straightforward for reaching common thresholds like level 40 (Land of the Goblins) or level 61 (Lunar Diplomacy).

Rush Level 99

Dragonhide Bodies offer the highest XP rates. Black D'hide Bodies give 258 XP each at level 84. Combined with fast banking, you can achieve 400K+ XP/hr.

Train on an Ironman

Glassblowing is the go-to Ironman Crafting method. Collect seaweed and sand from Superglass Make spell. Blow the best glass items available for consistent XP without GE dependency.

Spend the Least GP Possible

Pottery and Glassblowing have the lowest material costs. Pottery uses soft clay (~5 GP), and glass items use molten glass (~15 GP). Both are cheap but slower than premium methods.

Gem Cutting

Cut uncut gems for fast, consistent XP. Each gem type gives more XP at higher levels. Sapphires (50 XP) to Zenyte (200 XP). Speed: ~2,800 cuts/hour. Best for rapid leveling when cost isn't the priority.

Glassblowing

Blow molten glass into various items. Very cheap material cost (~15 GP per glass). Unpowered Orbs (52.5 XP) are the sweet spot for XP vs cost. Essential for Ironmen who craft their own glass.

Leather & Dragonhide

Leather items at low levels, then dragonhide bodies at high levels. Green D'hide Bodies (186 XP at level 63) through Black D'hide Bodies (258 XP at level 84). Highest XP rates in the skill.

Jewellery Making

Combine gold bars with cut gems to create rings, necklaces, and amulets. Moderate XP with potential profit on high-demand items like Dragonstone Necklaces.

Battlestaves

Attach orbs to battlestaves for 100 XP each. The primary profit-making Crafting method. Water Battlestaves typically yield 500-800 GP profit per staff.

Pottery & Miscellaneous Items

Very cheap but slow. Useful only for early levels (1-20). Unfired pots, bowls, and plant pots cost almost nothing to make.

Maximum XP per Hour

Dragonhide bodies (Green → Black) at 350K-450K XP/hr. Fastest path to 99 but can be costly depending on market prices.

Highest Profit per Item

Battlestaves consistently profit 500-800 GP per staff. With 2,500 staves/hour, that's 1.25-2M GP/hr while training.

Lowest GP per XP

Glassblowing with unpowered orbs costs ~0.3 GP/XP. Pottery is even cheaper but significantly slower.

Balanced Training

Jewellery making offers moderate XP with potential profit on popular items. Good for players who want both progress and income.

AFK-Friendly Methods

Gem cutting is highly AFK — click once per gem, no banking complexity. Glassblowing is also semi-AFK with long animation cycles.

How the Crafting Calculator Calculates Results

XP Remaining

Subtracts your current XP from your target level XP using the OSRS experience table.

Items Needed

Divides XP remaining by XP per item, rounding up to ensure you reach your target.

Material Requirements

Multiplies items needed by materials per item (e.g., 3 hides per dragonhide body).

Profit & Loss

Calculates: (Items × Sell Price) − (Items × Material Cost). Positive = profit, negative = loss.

GP per XP

Net cost divided by total XP gained. Lower is better. Negative values mean you profit.

Time Estimates

Based on typical crafting rates per hour for each category, accounting for banking time.

Expert Tips to Reduce Crafting Costs

Monitor Grand Exchange Prices

Material prices fluctuate daily. Buy during low-demand periods for savings of 5-15% on bulk purchases.

Train During Price Swings

When new content releases, certain items spike in price. Sell crafted items during spikes for maximum profit.

Compare Multiple Methods Before Buying Supplies

Use this calculator to compare 3-4 methods at your current level. The cheapest option changes based on current GE prices.

Mix Profit and XP Methods

Alternate between battlestaves (profit) and dragonhide (XP) to balance your bank balance and progression.

Avoid Overbuying Materials

Buy materials in batches of 1,000-5,000. Prices change, and you might find a cheaper method mid-training.

Common Crafting Training Mistakes

  • Training without checking GP per XP — Some items cost 3× more per XP than alternatives at the same level.
  • Buying supplies before comparing methods — Always calculate costs for 2-3 options before committing.
  • Ignoring profitable alternatives — Battlestaves can profit while giving good XP. Don't assume all Crafting training costs money.
  • Using outdated Grand Exchange prices — Prices change daily. Check current prices before large purchases.
  • Focusing only on XP/hour — The fastest method isn't always the most efficient when considering GP cost.
  • Forgetting quest unlock requirements — Check if your target level also requires specific quests (e.g., Slayer Helm at 55).
  • Selling crafted items too early — Some items sell for more at certain times of day or week.
