Build the Most Efficient Herblore Training Plan. Calculate potions needed, herb costs, secondary ingredients, and whether you'll profit or lose GP. Compare herb cleaning, unfinished potions, finished potions, divine potions, swamp tar, and barbarian herblore. or map out your route with the OSRS construction calculator.

Whether you're rushing 99 with divine potions, training profitably with herb cleaning, unlocking Super Combats, or progressing as an Ironman with self-farmed herbs, this calculator uses XP values, potion recipes, and GE prices to plan your optimal route.

What Are You Trying to Achieve?

Fastest Route to 99

Make Saradomin Brews (180 XP, level 81) or Super Combat Potions (150 XP, level 90). At 2,500 potions/hour, expect 375K-450K XP/hr. Cost: ~100-200M GP depending on market prices.

Lowest GP Cost

Clean Grimy Herbs for profit or minimal loss. Cleaning Ranarr herbs often profits 200-300 GP per herb while giving 7.5 XP each. Very slow but essentially free training.

Highest Profit While Training

Clean profitable herbs (Ranarr, Snapdragon, Torstol) or make potions with favorable market margins. Prayer Potions and Super Restores frequently profit during high-demand periods.

Ironman-Friendly Progression

Farm your own herbs using herb runs. Make potions you'll actually use (Prayer, Super Combat, Stamina). Kingdom of Miscellania produces herbs passively.

Unlock High-Level Potions

Level 77 for Stamina Potions. Level 81 for Saradomin Brews. Level 90 for Super Combat Potions. These are the most impactful Herblore milestones for PvM players.

Cleaning Grimy Herbs

Clean herbs by using them from your inventory. XP ranges from 2.5 (Guam) to 15 (Torstol). Very fast per action (~5,000/hr) but low XP per herb. Can profit on Ranarr, Snapdragon, and Torstol.

Making Unfinished Potions

Combine clean herbs with vials of water. No XP directly, but unlocks finished potion creation. Use Zahur in Nardah to make unfinished potions at 200 GP per potion for Ironmen.

Creating Finished Potions

The primary Herblore training method. Combine unfinished potions with secondary ingredients. XP ranges from 25 (Attack Potion) to 180 (Saradomin Brew). ~2,500 potions/hour.

Divine Potion Production

Adds crystal dust to super potions. Low XP per action but creates valuable divine variants. Best as supplementary training rather than a primary method.

Swamp Tar Processing

Combine herbs with swamp tar for moderate XP. Creates 15 tar per action. Harralander Tar (72.5 XP) is the best option. Good alternative when potion prices are unfavorable.

Barbarian Herblore

Create 2-dose potions by adding roe/caviar to existing potions. Requires Barbarian Training completion. Low XP but provides unique items.

Herb Progression Ladder

Guam Lvl 3 Tarromin Lvl 11 Ranarr Lvl 25 Snapdragon Lvl 59 Torstol Lvl 75

Low-Level Herbs

Guam (2.5 XP clean, Lvl 3), Marrentill (3.8 XP, Lvl 5), Tarromin (5 XP, Lvl 11). Cheap and widely available. Use for early training and basic potions.

Mid-Level Herbs

Ranarr (7.5 XP, Lvl 25), Toadflax (8 XP, Lvl 30), Irit (8.8 XP, Lvl 40). Ranarr is expensive but essential for Prayer Potions. Toadflax makes Sara Brews.

High-Level Herbs

Kwuarm (11.3 XP, Lvl 54), Snapdragon (11.8 XP, Lvl 59), Cadantine (12.5 XP, Lvl 65). Snapdragon makes Super Restores — one of the most demanded potions.

Premium Herbs

Torstol (15 XP, Lvl 75) is the highest-value herb. Makes Zamorak Brews and is needed for Overload-like combinations. Dwarf Weed for Ranging Potions.

Rare & High-Value Herbs

Some herbs are primarily obtained from PvM drops or special sources. Lantadyme (Antifire Potions), Cadantine (Super Defence), and Torstol command premium prices.

Quest Requirement Levels

Many quests require specific Herblore levels. Level 36 for Eadgar's Ruse, Level 45 for Jungle Potion, Level 69 for Song of the Elves. Use budget potions to reach these thresholds.

Prayer Potion Unlock

Level 38 unlocks Prayer Potions — one of the most essential supplies in OSRS. These are always in demand and can be profitable to make.

Saradomin Brew Unlock

Level 81 unlocks Saradomin Brews. Essential for high-level PvM content like raids. Toadflax + Crushed Nest = 180 XP.

Stamina Potion Milestone

Level 77 unlocks Stamina Potions. Required for efficient gameplay and always in demand. Super Energy + Amylase Crystal = 102 XP.

Super Combat & High-End Potions

Level 90 unlocks Super Combat Potions. Combines Super Attack, Strength, and Defence with Torstol = 150 XP. The ultimate melee potion.

How the Herblore Calculator Works

XP Remaining Calculation

XP Remaining = Target Level XP − Current XP, using the OSRS experience table.

Potion Quantity Formula

Potions Needed = ⌈XP Remaining ÷ XP per Potion⌉. Rounded up to ensure target is reached.

Material Requirement Formula

Herbs = Potions Needed × 1. Secondaries = Potions × Secondaries per Potion (usually 1).

GP Cost Calculation

Total Cost = (Herbs × Herb Price) + (Secondaries × Secondary Price).

Profit / Loss Estimation

Profit/Loss = (Potions × Sell Price) − Total Cost. Positive = profit.

GP per XP Analysis

GP/XP = (Total Cost − Revenue) ÷ XP Gained. Negative = you profit per XP.

Advanced Herblore Optimization Tips

Use Zahur for Faster Preparation

Zahur in Nardah cleans herbs and makes unfinished potions for 200 GP each. Saves time, especially for Ironmen.

Monitor Live GE Prices

Herb and potion prices change frequently. A potion that costs money today might profit tomorrow.

Compare Multiple Potion Routes

Use this calculator to test 3-4 different potions at your level. The cheapest option varies with market conditions.

Train During Market Swings

Buy herbs when supply is high (weekends). Sell potions when demand peaks (raid release periods).

Balance Profit and XP

Alternate between profitable herb cleaning and fast potion making to maintain your GP stack.

Stockpile Herbs Before Price Increases

Before new content releases, herb prices often spike. Buy in advance when prices are stable.

Common Herblore Training Mistakes

  • Buying herbs before checking GP/XP — Different potions have wildly different costs per XP.
  • Ignoring profitable herb-cleaning methods — Cleaning Ranarr and Snapdragon often profits.
  • Training only for XP instead of efficiency — Making useful potions saves money in the long run.
  • Forgetting unfinished potion costs — Buying unfinished potions adds to total cost.
  • Not comparing multiple potion recipes — Market prices change daily, shifting optimal methods.
  • Ignoring market fluctuations — Buying at peak prices significantly increases training costs.
  • Overbuying secondary ingredients — Buy in batches to avoid being stuck with excess supplies.
