Which Prayer Training Method Should You Choose?

I Want the Cheapest 99 Prayer

Use Ensouled Heads at the Dark Altar for the lowest GP per XP ratio. Ensouled Giant Heads and Ensouled Bloodveld Heads offer excellent value. Combine with the Arceuus Spellbook and Chaos Altar bone runs during off-peak hours for maximum savings.

I Want the Fastest XP

Use Superior Dragon Bones on a Gilded Altar with two burners lit. At 525 XP per bone and roughly 2,500 bones per hour, you can reach over 1.3M XP per hour. For even faster (but riskier) training, use the Chaos Altar for its bone-saving mechanic.

I Want the Safest Method

The Gilded Altar in your POH or someone else's POH offers zero risk with 350% XP multiplier. Ectofuntus gives the highest static XP per bone with no risk, though it's slower due to travel time.

I'm an Ironman

Ensouled Heads are the best Ironman Prayer method since you collect them naturally during Slayer. Supplement with bones from boss drops. Dragon bones from Vorkath or blue dragons are excellent for Gilded Altar training.

I Want the Best GP per XP

The Chaos Altar offers effectively 700% base XP on average because of its 50% bone-saving mechanic. This makes it the most GP-efficient method for any bone type, though it carries Wilderness PK risk.

Chaos Altar

Located in the Wilderness (level 38), the Chaos Altar offers 3.5× base XP and has a 50% chance to not consume the bone. This effectively averages 700% base XP, making it the most GP-efficient method. Risk: other players can attack you.

Gilded Altar

Found in POH chapels (requires level 75 Construction, boostable from 69). With both burners lit, gives 350% base XP. Zero risk, fast banking via Rimmington or POH teleports. The most popular safe method.

Ectofuntus

Located in Port Phasmatys. Gives 400% base XP per bone — the highest static multiplier. However, requires grinding bones and filling buckets of slime, making it significantly slower than altar methods.

Sacred Bone Burner

An alternative training method that provides 300% base XP. Useful for mid-level accounts without access to a Gilded Altar.

Demonic Offering

An Arceuus spell that offers bones for 300% base XP. Works anywhere without needing an altar. Useful during combat and Slayer tasks.

Regular Bone Burying

Simply burying bones gives only base XP (1×). Only recommended for very early Prayer levels (1-15) or when no other option is available.

Hydra Bones1105,800 GP15.1Gilded

Low Budget Bones

Big Bones at 210 GP each offer the cheapest GP per XP ratio. With a Chaos Altar, you can train Prayer for as little as 2 GP/XP. Ideal for early accounts and those on a tight budget.

Mid-Tier Bones

Wyrm Bones (50 XP, ~1,200 GP) and Babydragon Bones (30 XP, ~650 GP) offer a middle ground between cost and speed. Good for mid-level training.

High-End Dragon Bones

Dragon Bones remain the most popular choice for Prayer training. At 72 XP base and roughly 2,100 GP each, they offer excellent value at the Chaos Altar (effectively ~4.2 GP/XP with bone saving).

Premium Prayer Training

Superior Dragon Bones at 150 XP base are the fastest bone-based method but cost ~10,500 GP each. Best for players who prioritize speed over cost. Hydra Bones at 110 XP offer a strong compromise.

Special Bones & Shards

Blessed Bone Shards offer an alternative training path through the Fortis Colosseum. Dagannoth Bones at 125 XP are excellent drops from DKS.

Plan Your Prayer Journey by Goal Instead of Level

Unlock Protection Prayers (43)

Level 43 unlocks all three Protection Prayers — the most impactful Prayer milestone for new players. Requires only 22,406 XP from level 1. With Dragon Bones at a Gilded Altar, you need ~89 bones (~187K GP). Most players consider this the minimum Prayer level.

Reach Piety Requirements

Piety requires 70 Prayer and completion of King's Ransom + Knight Waves. At 737,627 XP, you need ~2,930 Dragon Bones on a Gilded Altar (~6.2M GP). Piety is essential for efficient melee combat.

Prepare for Raids

Most raid teams require 74+ Prayer for Rigour. Level 77 unlocks Augury for magic DPS. Budget roughly 8-12M GP for Dragon Bones at a Gilded Altar to reach these milestones.

Elite PvM Prayer Levels

Level 85+ Prayer provides longer prayer durations for bossing. Some late-game PvM setups benefit from 90+ Prayer for extended trips.

Complete Level 99 Prayer

Level 99 requires 13,034,431 XP. With Dragon Bones at a Chaos Altar: ~37,200 bones (~78M GP). With Superior Dragon Bones at Gilded Altar: ~24,800 bones (~260M GP).

Main Accounts

Main accounts benefit most from the Chaos Altar with Dragon Bones. The 50% bone-saving mechanic nearly halves the cost, making it significantly cheaper than Gilded Altar despite the Wilderness risk. Budget: ~78M GP to 99 Prayer.

Ironmen

Ironmen should collect Ensouled Heads during Slayer for budget training. Supplement with Dragon Bones from Vorkath for faster XP. Use Gilded Altar in your own POH for bones.

Skillers

Skillers with 1 combat can train Prayer using bones on Gilded Altars (hosted by other players) or through Ashes with Demonic Offering.

PvM Accounts

PvM-focused players should prioritize reaching 77 Prayer for Rigour and Augury. Use Hydra Bones from Alchemical Hydra drops at a Gilded Altar for efficiency.

Ultimate Ironmen

UIM players face unique challenges due to limited inventory. Chaos Altar with noted bones (using the noted bone mechanic) is excellent. Ensouled Heads during combat tasks are also viable.

Hidden Ways to Reduce Prayer Training Costs

Watch Live Grand Exchange Prices

Bone prices fluctuate daily. Dragon Bones can swing ±200 GP per bone. Buy during off-peak hours when supply is higher and demand lower.

Choose Better GP per XP Instead of Highest XP

Superior Dragon Bones give fast XP but cost ~20 GP/XP at Gilded Altar. Dragon Bones at Chaos Altar cost only ~4.2 GP/XP — nearly 5× cheaper per XP gained.

Mix Multiple Bone Types

Start with Big Bones for levels 1-43 (cheap), then switch to Dragon Bones for 43-70, and Hydra/Superior for 70+. This balances speed and cost.

Train During Market Price Drops

Bones drop in price during Double XP speculation and when new bone sources enter the game. Monitor GE tracker sites for price trends.

Use Wilderness Efficiently

Bring only 1 inventory of bones per Chaos Altar trip. Use burning amulet teleports. Risk is minimal per trip if you don't bring expensive gear.

Prayer Calculator Formulas Explained

XP Remaining Formula

XP Remaining = Target Level XP − Current XP. Uses the official OSRS experience table where Level 99 = 13,034,431 XP.

Bones Required Formula

Bones Needed = ⌈XP Remaining ÷ (Base XP × Method Multiplier)⌉. The ceiling function ensures you always have enough bones.

Method Multiplier Formula

Each method applies a multiplier: Bury (1×), Demonic/Sacred (3×), Gilded/Chaos (3.5×), Ectofuntus (4×). Chaos Altar additionally saves 50% of bones on average.

GP Cost Formula

Total Cost = Bones Needed × GE Price per Bone. For Chaos Altar, effective cost is reduced by the bone-saving mechanic.

GP per XP Formula

GP per XP = Total Cost ÷ Total XP Gained. Lower is better. This metric lets you directly compare methods regardless of bone type.

Common Prayer Planning Mistakes

  • Buying expensive bones without comparing GP/XP — Superior Dragon Bones cost 5× more per XP than Dragon Bones at Chaos Altar.
  • Ignoring Chaos Altar bone preservation — The 50% bone saving effectively doubles your bone value.
  • Choosing only the fastest method — Speed isn't always worth the extra cost. Balance GP/XP with XP/hour.
  • Forgetting live GE price changes — Prices fluctuate daily. Always check current prices before buying.
  • Ignoring ensouled heads as a budget option — They offer excellent GP/XP and combat XP alongside Prayer XP.
  • Training beyond the level actually needed — Most players only need 70-77 Prayer. Don't overspend for unnecessary levels.
  • Underestimating Wilderness risk — Bring minimal gear and only 1 inventory of bones per Chaos Altar trip.
