High Alchemy Profit Workflow

Choose Item Import GE Price Subtract Rune Cost Calculate Profit Estimate XP & GP 💰 Decide: Alch or Sell

Choose Your Alching Goal First

Instead of starting with formulas, organize around your player intent to find the right alching strategy.

Maximum GP Profit

Focus on items with the highest positive margin between GE buy price + nature rune cost and High Alchemy value. Rune Platebodies, Battlestaves, and Dragon items often have the best margins.

Cheapest Magic XP

Find items that break even or have minimal loss. This gives you free (or nearly free) Magic XP at 65 XP per cast. Many items fluctuate around break-even throughout the day.

AFK Magic Training

High Alchemy is inherently AFK — one click every 5 ticks. Buy a stack of profitable items, equip a fire staff, and alch while doing other activities like agility or watching content.

Bank Cleanup

Have untradeable drops or junk items? Check their alchemy value before dropping. Many quest items, clue rewards, and monster drops are worth more alched than sold.

Bulk Item Alching

For high-volume sessions, consider buy limits. Most items have 4-hour buy limits on the GE. Diversify across 5-10 items to maintain continuous alching.

Ironman Resource Management

Ironmen can't buy items from the GE. Calculate alchemy value for drops you accumulate — alching provides both GP and Magic XP without selling on the GE.

Compare Every Cost Before You Cast

Rather than listing profitable items, understand each factor affecting profitability to make informed decisions.

Item Purchase Price

The GE buy price is your primary cost. Monitor prices throughout the day — items can fluctuate 500-2000 GP, turning a loss into profit or vice versa.

High Alchemy Value

Every item has a fixed High Alchemy value determined by Jagex. This never changes. The alchemy value is always 60% of the item's store price (when a store exists).

Nature Rune Cost

Nature runes cost ~105 GP each. This is a fixed cost per cast. Running Nature runes yourself can reduce this cost for Ironmen.

Fire Rune Savings

High Alchemy requires 5 fire runes per cast. Using a Fire Staff (or any staff providing fire runes) eliminates this cost — saving 25 GP per cast.

Grand Exchange Margin

The difference between GE buy price and alch value minus rune costs = your profit margin. Even 50 GP profit per cast adds up to 60K GP/hr.

Buy Limit Considerations

Successful High Alchemy planning depends on comparing an item's purchase price plus rune cost against its fixed High Alchemy value, while also considering Grand Exchange availability and buy limits.

Understand Every Number the Calculator Shows

Profit Per Cast

High Alch Value − GE Buy Price − Nature Rune Cost − Fire Rune Cost (if no staff). Positive = profit. Negative = loss per cast.

Total Session Profit

Profit Per Cast × Total Quantity. Shows your complete session profit/loss before you start buying items.

Magic XP Gained

Each High Alchemy cast grants 65 Magic XP. 1,000 alchs = 65,000 XP. This is fixed regardless of item or profit.

GP per XP

Total Profit ÷ Total XP. Positive = you're getting paid to train. Negative = the GP cost per XP point of Magic training.

Profit Per Hour

At ~1,200 casts per hour (5 ticks per cast), multiply profit per cast by 1,200. Even 100 GP profit per cast = 120K GP/hr.

Break-Even Price

The maximum GE buy price at which alching still makes profit: High Alch Value − Nature Rune Cost − Fire Rune Cost. Buy below this price for guaranteed profit.

Return on Investment (ROI)

Total Profit ÷ Total Investment. Shows percentage return on your gold. High-volume, low-margin items can still have excellent ROI.

Find the Right Item for Your Budget

Low Budget Alching (Under 1M GP)

Yew Longbows, Magic Longbows, and Green Dragonhide Bodies are affordable with consistent margins. Low cost per item means you can buy hundreds.

Mid-Tier Investments (1M-10M GP)

Adamant Platebodies, Rune items, and Battlestaves offer better profit per cast. GE buy limits may restrict daily volume.

High Capital Strategies (10M+ GP)

Rune Platebodies and high-value items give the best profit per cast. Need significant starting capital but generate the most GP/hr.

High-Volume Items

Items with high GE buy limits (like bolts, runes, or common drops) allow larger sessions without waiting for buy limits to reset.

Buy-Limit Friendly Choices

Diversify across 5-10 items to work around the 4-hour buy limit. Set GE offers for multiple items simultaneously.

Profit vs Magic XP: Which Should You Prioritize?

Maximum Profit

Choose items with the highest profit per cast. You'll earn GP while training Magic. Best for players who need both GP and Magic XP simultaneously.

Break-Even Training

Find items at exactly break-even price. You get free Magic XP with zero GP loss — the most efficient way to train if GP is limited.

Fast XP Methods

High Alchemy gives 65 XP per 5 ticks = 78K XP/hr. This is slower than burst spells but completely AFK. Pair with other activities for maximum efficiency.

Long AFK Sessions

Buy thousands of profitable items and alch during agility, questing, or while watching content. The AFK nature of alching makes it ideal for passive training.

Opportunity Cost of Selling Instead

Some items sell for more on the GE than their alch value minus rune cost. Always compare: if GE sell price > alch value - rune cost, sell on GE instead.

Advanced High Alchemy Planning

Session Profit Forecasting

Calculate total profit before buying. If alching 1,000 Rune Platebodies at 695 GP profit each, expect ~695K GP total profit plus 65K Magic XP.

Budget Allocation

Divide your budget across multiple items to avoid buy limit delays. 10M GP spread across 5 items = sustained alching without waiting.

Managing Buy Limits

Most armour and weapon items have a buy limit of 70 per 4 hours. Plan your item rotation around these limits for uninterrupted sessions.

Price Volatility Awareness

GE prices fluctuate with supply and demand. Check current prices before bulk buying. An item profitable yesterday might be a loss today.

Combining Alching with Other Skills

High Alchemy can be cast while doing Agility, waiting for trees to grow, or between Slayer kills. This maximizes your time efficiency by training two skills simultaneously.

Tracking Market Changes

Many modern alchemy calculators also estimate session profit, GP per XP, bankroll usage, and recommend profitable items using live Grand Exchange pricing.

Common High Alchemy Mistakes

  • Buying items without checking current margins — Always verify GE prices before bulk purchasing. Margins change hourly.
  • Ignoring Nature rune costs — At 105 GP each, Nature runes add a significant cost that must be subtracted from alch value.
  • Forgetting staff-based Fire rune savings — Using a Fire Staff saves 25 GP per cast (5 fire runes × 5 GP). Always equip one.
  • Chasing outdated profitable items — Profit margins change constantly. Verify current prices before every session.
  • Overlooking Grand Exchange buy limits — Most items have a 70/4hr buy limit. Don't plan 1,000 alchs of one item without checking.
  • Confusing alchemy value with market value — Alch value is fixed by Jagex. Market value fluctuates. They are different numbers.
  • Ignoring GP per XP efficiency — Even profitable alching costs opportunity. Compare against other Magic XP methods.

Expert Tips to Improve Alching Efficiency

  • Monitor Live Prices — Check GE prices before every session. Set up price alerts for your favourite alch items.
  • Diversify Item Selection — Use 5-10 items to avoid buy limit bottlenecks. Rotate based on daily margins.
  • Rotate Around Buy Limits — Set offers for the next batch while alching the current one. Zero downtime.
  • Use Fire Staves — Always equip a fire-providing staff. Saves 25 GP per cast, 30K GP per 1,200 casts.
  • Calculate Before Buying — Use this calculator before every session. Never assume yesterday's margins still apply.
  • Balance XP with Profit — Consider whether you're optimising for GP, Magic XP, or both. Different items serve different goals.
