What Is the OSRS Magic Calculator?

The OSRS Magic Calculator is a comprehensive planning tool for Magic training. It calculates XP remaining, spell casts needed, total rune cost, GP per XP efficiency, and estimated training time. Unlike a generic XP calculator, this tool accounts for the unique economics of Magic — where every spell cast costs runes.

Magic is one of the most versatile skills in Old School RuneScape. It's used for offensive combat spells, teleportation, High Alchemy for profit, enchanting jewellery, and utility spells like Superheat Item. Three distinct spellbooks (Standard, Ancient Magicks, and Lunar) offer different training approaches with varying costs and XP rates.

Combat Spells

Strike, Bolt, Blast, Wave, and Surge spells deal damage and provide combat XP. Ice Burst and Ice Barrage from Ancient Magicks are popular for Slayer training.

Teleportation

Teleport spells provide moderate Magic XP while offering practical travel benefits.

Alchemy

High Level Alchemy (level 55) converts items to GP while gaining 65 XP per cast — one of the most popular training methods.

Enchanting

Enchanting bolts and jewellery provides decent XP with relatively low rune costs.

Utility Spells

Superheat Item, Plank Make, and Tan Leather combine Magic XP with other skill benefits.

Ancient Magicks

The Ancient spellbook offers powerful multi-target combat spells like Ice Burst (level 70) and Ice Barrage (level 94).

Lunar Spellbook

Lunar spells focus on utility — Superglass Make, String Jewellery, Plank Make, and support spells.

Best Magic Training Methods by Level

Levels 1–30

Cast Strike spells on low-level monsters or complete quests like Witch's Potion and Imp Catcher for early XP. Enchanting jewellery is also viable from level 7.

Levels 30–55

Use Fire Bolt with Chaos Gauntlets for decent XP, or telegraph spells for quick casts. Alternatively, splash Fire Strike AFK for hands-off training.

Levels 55–70

High Level Alchemy becomes available at 55 — the most popular Magic training method. Alch profitable items for GP-positive training or alch shop items at small loss for AFK XP.

Levels 70–94

Ice Burst on clustered Slayer tasks (Dust Devils, Nechryaels) gives excellent Magic + Slayer XP. Alternatively, Stun + Alch at level 80 for high XP without combat.

Levels 94–99

Ice Barrage becomes available at 94 — the fastest Magic training method. Barrage Slayer tasks for ~350K+ Magic XP per hour while earning Slayer XP and loot.

Tips for Faster Magic Training

  • Complete quest XP rewards — Several quests give significant Magic XP for free.
  • Choose the right spellbook — Standard for utility, Ancient for combat, Lunar for skilling.
  • Balance GP cost and XP rates — Barrage is fast but expensive; Alching is slow but free or profitable.
  • Train Magic during Slayer — Bursting/Barraging Slayer tasks gives dual XP progression.
  • Use profit-based spells when possible — High Alchemy on profitable items earns GP while training.
  • Upgrade Magic gear gradually — Better Magic bonus = higher accuracy = faster kills.

Common Magic Training Mistakes

  • Choosing expensive spells without comparing GP/XP efficiency
  • Ignoring utility spells that provide profitable XP
  • Forgetting defensive casting changes XP distribution
  • Buying runes in small quantities instead of bulk
  • Training without considering upcoming spell unlocks
  • Ignoring Ancient and Lunar spellbook advantages
