Whether you're training Construction as cheaply as possible, unlocking level 83 for a max POH, reaching 99 for the cape, or earning Carpenter Points for the outfit, this calculator handles every Mahogany Homes scenario with accurate XP tables and live plank prices.
Mahogany Homes is the cheapest Construction training method in OSRS. Adept contracts (teak planks) offer the best GP/XP ratio at ~3.2 GP/XP, saving you 50-70% compared to traditional methods like Oak Larders or Mahogany Tables.
Level 83 (boostable to 91) unlocks the Ornate Jewellery Box, the most valuable POH upgrade. Using Adept contracts, you need approximately 2,400 contracts from level 1 — about 130K teak planks and ~25 hours of training.
For 99 Construction via Mahogany Homes, Expert contracts are optimal. You'll need roughly 6,360 contracts, 38,160 mahogany planks, and earn 31,800 Carpenter Points — enough for the full outfit and Plank Sack with points to spare.
Expert contracts give 5 points each. For the full Carpenter's Outfit (3,200 points), you need 640 Expert contracts. Plan your training to earn points alongside XP rather than grinding them separately.
Ironmen benefit enormously from Mahogany Homes because it uses fewer planks per XP than traditional methods. Teak planks from Fossil Island + Adept contracts is the recommended Ironman route.
| Contract | Level Required | Plank Type | XP per Contract | Carpenter Points | Best For |

| Beginner | 1 | Regular | ~256 | 2 | Early Game |

Construction requirement: Level 1. Uses regular planks (2 per contract). Gives ~256 XP and 2 Carpenter Points. Best for brand new accounts or players below level 20. Very slow XP but extremely cheap materials.
Construction requirement: Level 20. Uses oak planks (4 per contract). Gives ~512 XP and 3 Carpenter Points. Good for budget-conscious players from 20-50. Recommended for players who want to save GP while training.
Construction requirement: Level 50. Uses teak planks (5 per contract). Gives ~1,024 XP and 4 Carpenter Points. The best GP/XP ratio of all contract tiers. Widely recommended by the community for cost-efficient training.
Construction requirement: Level 70. Uses mahogany planks (6 per contract). Gives ~2,048 XP and 5 Carpenter Points. The fastest Mahogany Homes XP at approximately 280,000 XP/hr. Best for players prioritizing speed within MH.
| Method | XP/Hour | GP Cost | GP/XP | Click Intensity | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mahogany Homes | 280K | Low | ~3.2 | Medium | Budget Training |
| Oak Larders | 180K | Medium | ~9.8 | High | Mid-Level Players |
| Mahogany Tables | 900K | Very High | ~14.1 | High | Maximum XP |
| Mythical Capes | 580K | Medium | ~7.5 | Medium | Efficient POH Training |
Mahogany Homes Expert provides 280K XP/hr at ~3.2 GP/XP, while Oak Larders give 180K XP/hr at ~9.8 GP/XP. MH saves roughly 60-70% of your total GP cost but is slower. For players who value their GP more than their time, Mahogany Homes is clearly superior.
Mythical Capes offer ~580K XP/hr at ~7.5 GP/XP — faster than MH but more expensive. If you've completed Dragon Slayer II and want a middle ground between cost and speed, Mythical Capes are excellent. MH is still 55% cheaper.
Mahogany Tables are the undisputed king of XP/hr at 900K+, but they cost ~14.1 GP/XP. That's roughly 4.4x more expensive than MH Expert contracts. Choose Tables when you want to rush 99 regardless of cost.
From level 1 to 99: MH Expert costs ~42M GP in ~46 hours. Oak Larders cost ~65M in ~72 hours. Mahogany Tables cost ~150M in ~14 hours. Your choice depends on your budget and how much time you have.
Mahogany Homes Adept contracts save the most GP overall at ~3.2 GP/XP. Expert contracts are slightly more expensive but significantly faster. Community discussions consistently recommend MH for players prioritizing cost savings over maximum XP/hour.
Each contract tier requires a specific plank type. Beginner uses 2 regular planks, Novice uses 4 oak, Adept uses 5 teak, and Expert uses 6 mahogany. The calculator above shows your exact total based on contracts needed.
Most Mahogany Homes contracts require 1-2 steel bars for fixing broken items. Bring extras to avoid running out mid-contract. The calculator estimates total steel bars needed.
Efficient MH training requires teleports to each city. Essential teleports: Varrock, Falador, Ardougne, and Hosidius. Use house tabs, jewellery teleports, and NPC Contact to minimize travel time.
You always need a hammer and saw in your inventory. The Crystal Saw works and gives the +3 boost. Using a Plank Sack (Carpenter Points reward) lets you carry extra planks.
Typical inventory: Saw, hammer, 20 planks, 5 steel bars, house teleport, construction cape/teleport, and runes for NPC Contact. The Plank Sack holds 28 extra planks, reducing bank trips.
| Reward | Carpenter Points | Long-Term Value | Recommended Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carpenter's Outfit | 3,200 | Excellent | ★★★★★ |
| Plank Sack | 350 | Excellent | ★★★★★ |
| Amy's Saw | 500 | Very Good | ★★★★☆ |
| Supply Crates | 25 each | Good | ★★★☆☆ |

A functional POH starts at level 50 with basic portal chambers. Mahogany Homes Novice contracts can get you there cheaply from level 20 in about 200 contracts. Total cost: roughly 500K GP.
The Ornate Rejuvenation Pool requires level 90 (boostable from 82). Using MH Adept contracts from level 50 to 82 takes about 1,800 contracts and costs around 10M GP — far cheaper than traditional methods.
Level 83 unlocks the Ornate Jewellery Box (boostable to 91). From level 1, you need roughly 2,400 Adept contracts (~12,000 teak planks). Total cost: approximately 15M GP. This is the most recommended stopping point for most players.
For 99 Construction, switch to Expert contracts at level 70 for maximum XP/hr within MH. You'll complete approximately 6,360 Expert contracts, using 38,160 mahogany planks. Total cost: ~42M GP over ~46 hours.
Ironmen should use teak planks from Fossil Island with Adept contracts. Kingdom of Miscellania provides passive teak logs. Combine Woodcutting training with Construction planning for maximum efficiency.
Uses the official OSRS experience table: Target Level XP − Current XP = XP Remaining. Level 99 requires 13,034,431 XP total.
Contracts Needed = ⌈XP Remaining ÷ Average XP per Contract⌉. Each tier has a different average XP value based on OSRS Wiki verified data.
Total Planks = Contracts Needed × Planks per Contract. Beginner uses 2, Novice uses 4, Adept uses 5, Expert uses 6 planks per contract.
Carpenter Points = Contracts Needed × Points per Tier. Beginner gives 2, Novice 3, Adept 4, Expert 5 points per contract.
Total Cost = (Total Planks × Plank GE Price) + (Total Steel Bars × Steel Bar GE Price). Prices are based on recent Grand Exchange data.
Time = XP Remaining ÷ Effective XP/Hour. NPC Contact adds ~15% speed bonus by eliminating travel to the contract NPC.
The NPC Contact spell (Lunar spellbook, level 67 Magic) lets you get new contracts without returning to the NPC. This saves 15-30 seconds per contract and significantly increases your XP/hr.
Set up teleports to all contract cities: Varrock, Falador, Ardougne, and Hosidius. Use house teleport tabs, jewellery teleports, and skill cape teleports for fast travel between contracts.
Bring more planks than required per contract. Some contracts have bonus repair spots that give additional XP. The Plank Sack is invaluable for holding extra planks without sacrificing inventory space.
When you receive a contract, check the map — some contracts are very close to teleport locations. Prioritize these for faster completions and higher XP/hr.
Plank prices fluctuate on the Grand Exchange. Buying planks during off-peak hours or in bulk can save millions over a long training grind.
If you've earned the full Carpenter's Outfit (3,200 points), wear it for a 2.5% XP bonus. This compounds over thousands of contracts — saving approximately 2.5% of your total planks.
