Instead of explaining formulas first, here's what each stat actually does for your account.
Higher Attack increases your chance of landing melee hits. It also unlocks better weapons: 60 for Dragon, 70 for Whip, 75 for Godswords.
Strength directly increases your melee max hit. Each level adds roughly 0.4–0.6 to your maximum damage, making it the most impactful offensive stat.
Defence reduces how often enemies hit you and unlocks better armour. Level 70 for Barrows, 75 for DFS, 80+ for endgame equipment.
More HP means more food consumption before dying. Higher Hitpoints extends kill trips and reduces banking frequency during extended grinds.
Prayer provides protection prayers (43), Piety/Rigour/Augury (70/74/77), and overhead switching for PvP. Each Prayer level also gives more prayer points.
Ranged increases accuracy and damage with ranged weapons. Level 75 for Blowpipe, 80 for Dragon Crossbow, 99 for maximum Ranged DPS.
Magic unlocks spells, increases magic accuracy, and at high levels provides access to powerful spells like Blood Barrage and fire surge for PvM and PvP.

Whichever offensive stat contributes most to your current combat style. For melee-dominant accounts, Strength provides the fastest combat level increases.
Strength (melee), Ranged level (ranged), or Magic level (magic) directly increase max hit. Prioritize your dominant style's damage stat.
Defence and Hitpoints improve survivability. If you're dying frequently, train Defence to unlock better armour and increase your damage reduction.
Keep combat level as low as possible while maximizing offensive output. Pures avoid Defence; zerkers cap at 45; med levels stay under 110 combat.
Weapon tier unlocks are the most impactful upgrades. 60 Attack for Dragon, 70 for Whip/Trident, 75 for Godswords and Bow of Faerdhinen.
