Choose Your Combat Objective First

Instead of organizing by combat style, organize by player goals. Your objective determines which DPS metric matters most.

Fastest Boss Kills

For bossing, sustained DPS is your primary metric. Prioritize consistent damage output over burst damage. Weapons like Scythe of Vitur and Twisted Bow excel due to reliable DPS against high-HP targets.

Slayer Efficiency

Slayer tasks reward both XP and DPS. Slayer Helm's 15% bonus makes it the most impactful single gear upgrade. Optimize for fast kills per task rather than single-target DPS.

Raid Optimization

In raids, Time-to-Kill (TTK) across multiple bosses matters more than peak DPS on one. Gear switches and prayer flicking add real-world efficiency that pure DPS numbers miss.

PvP Damage Testing

PvP focuses on max hit — burst damage determines KO potential. Stack max hit multipliers from special attacks, Piety, and Super Combat potions to find your highest possible hit.

Budget Gear Performance

Compare cost per DPS point to find gear upgrades that matter. An Abyssal Whip at 2M GP provides excellent DPS/GP compared to a 150M Blade of Saeldor for only 8% more DPS.

Endgame Max DPS

Maximizing DPS requires optimizing every slot. Best-in-slot setups combine top weapons, Piety/Rigour/Augury, Super Combat/Divine Ranging, and Slayer Helm where applicable.

Compare Complete Gear Builds Side by Side

A dedicated comparison approach lets you evaluate full loadouts rather than individual items.

Melee Loadouts

Compare Abyssal Whip vs Ghrazi Rapier vs Blade of Saeldor. Factor in attack style bonuses — stab weapons outperform slash against certain monsters due to lower defence bonuses.

Ranged Loadouts

Blowpipe's fast attack speed (3 ticks) competes with Twisted Bow's raw power (5 ticks) depending on monster magic level. Bow of Faerdhinen dominates mid-range content with crystal armour.

Magic Loadouts

Tumeken's Shadow with its triple magic damage bonus outperforms Sanguinesti Staff on most targets. Harmonised Nightmare Staff with Fire Surge casts at 4 ticks instead of 5 for standard spells.

Hybrid Builds

Some encounters require switching styles mid-fight. Compare your DPS across styles to know when to switch and what TTK to expect with each phase.

Budget vs Best-in-Slot

Modern DPS tools allow comparing multiple loadouts against the same target using DPS, hit chance, max hit, and TTK rather than relying on max hit alone.

Break Down Every Damage Component

Rather than explaining formulas first, here's what contributes to your final DPS performance.

Accuracy Rolls

Your attack roll is compared against the monster's defence roll. A higher attack roll means a better chance of landing hits. Attack level, weapon accuracy, prayers, and potions all increase your roll.

Max Hit

The highest damage you can deal in a single hit. Determined by your effective strength level and total equipment strength bonus. Multiplicative bonuses from Slayer Helm and prayers stack on top.

Average Damage

When you land a hit, damage is uniformly distributed from 0 to max hit. Average hit = Hit Chance × Max Hit ÷ 2. This is the core of DPS calculation.

Attack Speed

Measured in game ticks (0.6 seconds each). A 4-tick weapon attacks every 2.4 seconds. Faster weapons accumulate damage quicker even with lower max hits.

Weapon Ticks

Whip: 4 ticks, Scythe: 5 ticks, Blowpipe: 3 ticks, Crossbows: 5 ticks. Speed directly impacts DPS — a 3-tick weapon with 20 max hit can outperform a 5-tick weapon with 30 max hit.

Defence Rolls

Monster defence roll = (Defence Level + 9) × (Defence Bonus + 64). Higher defence monsters require better accuracy to maintain DPS.

Damage Modifiers

Slayer Helm (+15%), Salve Amulet (+20%), Void (+10%), Dragon Hunter (+20%), prayers, and potions all modify your effective levels or final damage.

Test Against Different Enemy Types

Low Defence Monsters

Monsters like Ammonite Crabs (1 Defence) have near-100% hit chance with any setup. DPS is almost entirely determined by max hit and attack speed on these targets.

High Defence Bosses

Bosses like Corporeal Beast (310 Defence, 200 Defence Bonus) drastically reduce hit chance. Accuracy becomes the dominant factor — Piety and accuracy-focused gear matter more than raw strength.

Slayer Creatures

Slayer Helm's 15% bonus to both accuracy and damage makes it the single best DPS upgrade on task. Always calculate DPS with Slayer Task toggled on for accurate task planning.

Raid Bosses

Raid bosses vary widely in defence. Great Olm's head has different defence from its hands. Calculate DPS for each phase separately to optimize gear switches.

Custom Targets

Use custom defence, defence bonus, and HP values to test any scenario — PvP targets, theoretical setups, or unreleased content.

Why Higher Max Hit Doesn't Always Mean Higher DPS

Many players assume the weapon or setup with the highest max hit always deals the most damage. DPS calculators prove this wrong in many scenarios.

Accuracy vs Strength

A weapon with 50 max hit but 60% accuracy produces lower DPS (5.0) than one with 40 max hit and 90% accuracy (6.0). Against high-defence targets, accuracy becomes exponentially more important.

Faster Weapons vs Bigger Hits

Blowpipe's 3-tick speed means 33% more attacks per second than a 4-tick weapon. Even with a lower max hit, the accumulated damage often exceeds slower, harder-hitting alternatives.

Tick Speed Efficiency

DPS = Average Hit ÷ Attack Interval. A 1-tick improvement (5 ticks → 4 ticks) is a 25% DPS increase — equivalent to gaining 25% more max hit with no accuracy change.

Defence Scaling

As monster defence increases, hit chance drops non-linearly. Weapons with high accuracy bonuses scale better against tough targets than those with pure strength bonuses.

Sustained Damage vs Burst Damage

Many calculators demonstrate that higher DPS depends on attack speed and hit chance as well as max hit, especially on high-defence monsters.

Combat Optimization Checklist

  • Improve Accuracy First — Against high-defence targets, accuracy provides more DPS gain than strength bonuses.
  • Increase Effective Strength — Stack potions, prayers, and equipment strength bonuses multiplicatively.
  • Optimize Attack Speed — A faster weapon can outperform a slower one even with lower max hit.
  • Match Gear to Target — Use the correct attack style against each monster's lowest defence bonus.
  • Activate Correct Prayers — Piety, Rigour, and Augury are the most impactful free DPS upgrades.
  • Stack Equipment Bonuses — Slayer Helm, Salve Amulet, and Void all provide multiplicative damage increases.
  • Compare Before Buying Expensive Gear — Use the calculator to verify actual DPS gain before spending millions.

Common DPS Optimization Mistakes

  • Comparing max hit instead of DPS — Max hit ignores accuracy and attack speed, both critical for actual damage output.
  • Ignoring monster defence — A setup that dominates low-defence targets may underperform against bosses.
  • Using the wrong attack style — Stab, slash, and crush each target different defence bonuses. Check which is lowest.
  • Forgetting attack speed differences — A 1-tick speed difference is a 20-25% DPS change.
  • Not accounting for prayers or potions — These are massive DPS multipliers that change gear rankings.
  • Testing gear against unrealistic targets — Always test against your actual target, not a 0-defence dummy.
  • Ignoring special equipment effects — Slayer Helm, Salve, Dragon Hunter, and Arclight can double your DPS in specific scenarios.

Advanced Combat Simulation Insights

Multi-Hit Weapons

Scythe of Vitur hits up to 3 times per attack on large monsters (size 3+). Each hit is progressively weaker: 100%, 50%, 25% of max hit. This triples effective DPS against large targets but not small ones.

Special Weapon Effects

Dragon Claws' special attack distributes damage across 4 hits. If the first hits, subsequent hits are guaranteed — making its effective accuracy much higher than the stated hit chance.

Slayer Task Bonuses

Slayer Helm (i) provides 15% accuracy and 15% damage bonus on task. This stacks multiplicatively with other bonuses, making on-task DPS significantly higher than off-task.

Dragonbane & Demonbane Effects

Dragon Hunter Lance/Crossbow provides 20% accuracy and damage against dragons. Arclight provides 70% accuracy and damage against demons. These are the largest single-equipment DPS boosts available.

Raid-Specific Modifiers

Chambers of Xeric prayer bonuses scale differently. Theatre of Blood provides no scaling but requires precise DPS checks. Calculate accurately for raid success.

Equipment Set Effects

Advanced calculators commonly model unique weapon mechanics and monster-specific bonuses where applicable. Full Void provides a flat 10% damage increase with a 10% accuracy boost.

Frequently Asked Questions

The calculator uses the official OSRS combat formulas for accuracy rolls, max hit, and DPS calculation. Results match the game's mechanics with high precision.
DPS = (Hit Chance × Max Hit / 2) / Attack Speed in seconds. Hit Chance is determined by comparing your Attack Roll vs the monster's Defence Roll.
Yes. TTK is calculated as Monster HP / DPS, giving you the average time to defeat any target with your current setup.
Yes. Switch weapons, prayers, potions, and equipment bonuses to compare DPS across different loadouts against the same target.
Yes. All three combat styles are fully supported with appropriate weapons, prayers, potions, and damage formulas.
Yes. Use custom Defence Level, Defence Bonus, and Hitpoints fields to test any target including PvP opponents and unreleased content.
Significantly. Higher monster defence reduces your hit chance, which directly reduces DPS. Accuracy becomes more important than max hit against tanky targets.
Yes. All major prayers (Piety, Rigour, Augury) and potions (Super Combat, Divine Ranging, Imbued Heart) are included with accurate multipliers.
Because DPS depends on attack speed and hit chance too. A faster weapon with better accuracy can outperform a slower weapon with higher max hit.
Absolutely. Toggle Slayer Task for on-task bonuses. Use boss presets for raid targets. Compare multiple setups to find your optimal gear.
