For bossing, sustained DPS is your primary metric. Prioritize consistent damage output over burst damage. Weapons like Scythe of Vitur and Twisted Bow excel due to reliable DPS against high-HP targets.
Slayer tasks reward both XP and DPS. Slayer Helm's 15% bonus makes it the most impactful single gear upgrade. Optimize for fast kills per task rather than single-target DPS.
In raids, Time-to-Kill (TTK) across multiple bosses matters more than peak DPS on one. Gear switches and prayer flicking add real-world efficiency that pure DPS numbers miss.
PvP focuses on max hit — burst damage determines KO potential. Stack max hit multipliers from special attacks, Piety, and Super Combat potions to find your highest possible hit.
Compare cost per DPS point to find gear upgrades that matter. An Abyssal Whip at 2M GP provides excellent DPS/GP compared to a 150M Blade of Saeldor for only 8% more DPS.

Rather than explaining formulas first, here's what contributes to your final DPS performance.
Your attack roll is compared against the monster's defence roll. A higher attack roll means a better chance of landing hits. Attack level, weapon accuracy, prayers, and potions all increase your roll.
The highest damage you can deal in a single hit. Determined by your effective strength level and total equipment strength bonus. Multiplicative bonuses from Slayer Helm and prayers stack on top.
When you land a hit, damage is uniformly distributed from 0 to max hit. Average hit = Hit Chance × Max Hit ÷ 2. This is the core of DPS calculation.
Measured in game ticks (0.6 seconds each). A 4-tick weapon attacks every 2.4 seconds. Faster weapons accumulate damage quicker even with lower max hits.
Whip: 4 ticks, Scythe: 5 ticks, Blowpipe: 3 ticks, Crossbows: 5 ticks. Speed directly impacts DPS — a 3-tick weapon with 20 max hit can outperform a 5-tick weapon with 30 max hit.
Monster defence roll = (Defence Level + 9) × (Defence Bonus + 64). Higher defence monsters require better accuracy to maintain DPS.
Slayer Helm (+15%), Salve Amulet (+20%), Void (+10%), Dragon Hunter (+20%), prayers, and potions all modify your effective levels or final damage.

Monsters like Ammonite Crabs (1 Defence) have near-100% hit chance with any setup. DPS is almost entirely determined by max hit and attack speed on these targets.
Bosses like Corporeal Beast (310 Defence, 200 Defence Bonus) drastically reduce hit chance. Accuracy becomes the dominant factor — Piety and accuracy-focused gear matter more than raw strength.
Slayer Helm's 15% bonus to both accuracy and damage makes it the single best DPS upgrade on task. Always calculate DPS with Slayer Task toggled on for accurate task planning.
Raid bosses vary widely in defence. Great Olm's head has different defence from its hands. Calculate DPS for each phase separately to optimize gear switches.
Use custom defence, defence bonus, and HP values to test any scenario — PvP targets, theoretical setups, or unreleased content.
Many players assume the weapon or setup with the highest max hit always deals the most damage. DPS calculators prove this wrong in many scenarios.
A weapon with 50 max hit but 60% accuracy produces lower DPS (5.0) than one with 40 max hit and 90% accuracy (6.0). Against high-defence targets, accuracy becomes exponentially more important.
Blowpipe's 3-tick speed means 33% more attacks per second than a 4-tick weapon. Even with a lower max hit, the accumulated damage often exceeds slower, harder-hitting alternatives.
DPS = Average Hit ÷ Attack Interval. A 1-tick improvement (5 ticks → 4 ticks) is a 25% DPS increase — equivalent to gaining 25% more max hit with no accuracy change.
As monster defence increases, hit chance drops non-linearly. Weapons with high accuracy bonuses scale better against tough targets than those with pure strength bonuses.
Many calculators demonstrate that higher DPS depends on attack speed and hit chance as well as max hit, especially on high-defence monsters.

Scythe of Vitur hits up to 3 times per attack on large monsters (size 3+). Each hit is progressively weaker: 100%, 50%, 25% of max hit. This triples effective DPS against large targets but not small ones.
Dragon Claws' special attack distributes damage across 4 hits. If the first hits, subsequent hits are guaranteed — making its effective accuracy much higher than the stated hit chance.
Slayer Helm (i) provides 15% accuracy and 15% damage bonus on task. This stacks multiplicatively with other bonuses, making on-task DPS significantly higher than off-task.
Dragon Hunter Lance/Crossbow provides 20% accuracy and damage against dragons. Arclight provides 70% accuracy and damage against demons. These are the largest single-equipment DPS boosts available.
Chambers of Xeric prayer bonuses scale differently. Theatre of Blood provides no scaling but requires precise DPS checks. Calculate accurately for raid success.
Advanced calculators commonly model unique weapon mechanics and monster-specific bonuses where applicable. Full Void provides a flat 10% damage increase with a 10% accuracy boost.
