Portal Chamber vs Portal Nexus

Portal Chambers hold 3 teleports each — requiring multiple rooms. The Portal Nexus consolidates all destinations into one room with up to 30 teleports, making it a clear upgrade at level 72.

Chapel vs Gilded Altar Setup

The Chapel's Gilded Altar offers 350% Prayer XP with both burners lit, making it the best Prayer training method in the game. No external setup matches this.

Study vs Workshop

Study provides lecterns for enchanting tablets (valuable for teleport tabletsmaking). Workshop offers armour repair stands and flatpack creation. Both are essential for Ironmen.

Achievement Gallery vs Quest Hall

Achievement Gallery is far more valuable — it houses the Jewellery Box, Fairy Ring, Spirit Tree, and Occult Altar in one room. Quest Hall is purely decorative by comparison.

Formal Garden vs Superior Garden

Superior Garden contains the Ornate Rejuvenation Pool (full stat restore), Spirit Tree, and Fairy Ring. Formal Garden offers only hedges and decorations with no gameplay utility.

Calculate Your Entire House Expansion

House Growth Diagram

Room Construction Costs

Room shells cost 1K-200K GP each. The Achievement Gallery and Portal Nexus rooms are the most expensive at 200K GP each. Total shell costs for a full house: approximately 500K-1M GP.

House Expansion Limits

OSRS houses have a grid-based layout. Higher Construction levels expand your available grid from 3×3 (9 rooms) to larger sizes. Plan your grid before placing rooms.

Maximum Room Capacity

The maximum number of rooms is 33 across all floors. Most efficient layouts use 8-12 rooms. More rooms doesn't always mean better — utility density matters more.

Additional Floor Planning

First floor rooms sit above ground floor rooms. Stairs connect the floors. Plan both levels simultaneously to avoid rebuilding.

Garden Placement

Gardens must be placed on the edges of your house. The Superior Garden (with Pool) should be adjacent to your entrance for fastest access.

Dungeon Planning

Dungeons sit below your house. Dungeon rooms are useful for Oak Dungeon Door training at level 74. Plan dungeon access near your main entrance.

Optimize Your House Layout

Fast Teleport Layout

Place Portal Nexus adjacent to Achievement Gallery. Entrance → Nexus in 2 clicks. Saves 1-2 seconds per trip, which adds up over thousands of uses.

Bossing Layout

Pool → Jewellery Box → Portal Nexus within 2 rooms of each other. The classic PvM flow: Pool → Jewellery Box → Portal Nexus should require minimal walking.

Skilling Layout

Workshop, Study, and Costume Room grouped together. Lecterns and workbenches accessible from the central hub. Secondary to utility rooms.

Ironman Layout

All utility rooms plus Workshop for armour repair. Prioritizes function over aesthetics. Pool and Nexus near entrance, Workshop accessible.

Minimal Walking Layout

Everything within 2 rooms of the entrance. Compact 3×3 grid with Pool, Nexus, and Gallery adjacent. Maximum efficiency at the cost of expansion room.

Future-Proof Layout

Leave 2-3 empty grid slots adjacent to core rooms. Allows adding new rooms from OSRS updates without rebuilding your entire layout.

How the Room Calculator Works

Room Unlock Detection

Cross-references your Construction level against every room's requirement. Identifies which rooms you can immediately build and which need more levels.

Construction Requirement Engine

Uses the OSRS Construction level database to determine room availability. Accounts for Crystal Saw (+3) and Spicy Stew (+5) boosts for an effective +8 boost.

House Size Validation

Checks that your desired rooms fit within your POH grid limits. Alerts you if expansion is needed and estimates the Construction level required.

Cost Estimation

Sums room construction costs and essential furniture costs (Ornate Pool, Jewellery Box, Portal Nexus, Gilded Altar) for a total investment estimate.

Layout Recommendation Algorithm

Based on your selected playstyle, recommends optimal room placement. PvM layouts prioritize Pool-Nexus adjacency, skilling layouts group utility rooms.

Future Upgrade Suggestions

Identifies high-priority rooms not yet in your plan that your level supports, recommending additions that maximize house utility.

The calculator combines your Construction level, room unlocks, house dimension limits, GP costs, existing rooms, and preferred house purpose to generate a personalized POH expansion roadmap.

Planning Mistakes That Waste Millions of GP

  • Building expensive rooms too early — Wait until you have the Construction level for the best furniture before investing in a room.
  • Ignoring future Portal Nexus placement — Leave space for the Nexus even if you can't build it yet. Rebuilding later costs GP.
  • Poor entrance positioning — Place your entrance near your most-used rooms. Most players want Pool or Nexus first.
  • Removing and rebuilding rooms unnecessarily — Each removal costs GP and you lose all furniture inside. Plan once, build once.
  • Forgetting house size limitations — Your grid has limits. Don't fill every slot — leave room for future updates.
  • Building duplicate utility rooms — One Portal Nexus replaces multiple Portal Chambers. Don't build both.
  • Not planning for Achievement Gallery upgrades — The Gallery is the most versatile room. Budget for all its furniture upgrades.
